Before: This person suffered a severe degloving injury (skin and muscle peeled off the bone) and a year later presented with severe keloid (overactive) scars. Dr. Enzer presented her with treatment options including 5-fluorouracil/steroid injections, topical silicone scar ointment, and vascular laser. After discussing the risks, benefits, and expectations, a treatment plan of the topical scar ointment and vascular laser was started.

After: Four months after treating the scar with three vascular laser sessions and topical scar gel. Note that the scars are much smaller and less red. The skin has also returned to a softer and more normal consistency. Also, the itching, burning, and stinging associated with keloid scars has resolved. Although the skin can no longer be perfect, the patient is very pleased with the improvement after treatment.
